The site chosen for the station design, is Canberra Airport. Currently, the airport is being transformed into a newly designed airport terminal which will also mean that airline services will be increasing too and from Canberra. Above, is a rough render of what the new terminal will look like. There has also been a change in the roads around the airport, the main one being Ulinga Place, which will play the role as the main access point to the new terminal. This is also where the station will be located.
Site Plan original at 1:1000
The station has been designed to fit in with the new Terminal, but still be its own entity. The structure is flat and rectangular to suite the overall shape of the new terminal, and not rise above the height of the terminal itself. Materials (concrete and glass)have been chosen to suite the materials used for the new terminal. Glass has been integrated into the station to allow for light to enter though out the station to allow for day lighting throughout the day.
Because of the flat plain shape of the building, shading has been incorporated to allow for the station to take on its own identity, and create a interesting atmosphere for users of the rail while being protected from the elements.
To access the station, passengers need only cross the road at the traffic light in front of the terminal, where they will cross a bridge which is wheelchair accessible, and walk into the station. The ticket office and a kiosk will be located to their right and the restrooms to their left.
The station have been left open on the side where the light rail will enter to allow for natural ventilation.
