Week 11

I have been working on floor plans for the station. I looked at some existing stations and it is clear that their floor plans are very simple, ensuring easy access to the ticket office, kiosk and bathrooms, as well as the exit. The bridge leading to the station will be wide enough to allow access between the terminal and the station, and, in the case of emergencies, passengers can access the exit without creating a stampede in panic.

The above floor plan would waste a large amount of space when it comes to the rounded space in the entrance side of the platform.

The layout of the bathroom, ticket office and kiosk in the above plan will decrease the amount of space passengers have to exit and enter the platform area. This could increase danger of panicked passengers stampeding in an emergency and getting hurt around the light rail tracks.

This design seems to be the most appropriate as the ticket office, kiosk and bathrooms do not hinder access to and from the entrance and platform in any way. As a result, this floor plan will work best in the case of an emergency. The layout also optimises the space of the station.

I would like to keep the rail entrance side of the station completely open aside from a balustrade to avoid the risk of people falling. This will allow for a panoramic view of Canberra to passengers who are arriving in the city to give them a glimpse of what to expect.
