Whilst research ways to incorporate my concept into Canberra's existing infrastructure in a successful way, I watched a lecture on Youtube given by David Engwicht. The video is called- 'The art of Place Making' with David Engwicht.
I found his way of explaining place making incredibly helpful. He brought up many great point that assist in creating a successful public space:
Place making:
- take a place a place and make it into a public space
- its about the experience not the design of the space
- focus on movements
- "spontaneous exchange"
- you need to find a way of slowing people down when moving through the space
- create a anchoring presence
- introduce activity nodes
- density of activity
- focus on the micro not the macro
- citizen not customer- residents are treated like customers who pay their rates and in exchange they expect the city to provide everything they need for city living. We have to find a way to go back to a civilian model because a city is a co-operative enterprise that cannot be re run on a customer basis.
-think incremental not masterplan
This video helped me look at this project in a new light. I want to try and incorporate public spaces into the concept to ensure that the design is people friendly. I want to not only design for parliamentary uses but for public uses too.
