Week 4 Tutorial

In the week four tutorial we chose our groups for assignment one. I was placed with Jess and Claire. We spoke for a while about what we thought was expected from us in this assignment, and while everyone was quite confused about it overall, we thought we would try to figure out some issues regarding Parliament and going from there. Here are the main points raised:

·         Asylum seekers- and their lack of shelter, and space for placement
·         Travel for Politicians-
o    traveling to other Countries for politicians and even to other states is a costly exercise, both economically as well as for the environment
o   Creating fully integrated transport system
·         Healthcare- accessibility
·         Centerlink
·         Population growth
·         Bringing people to Canberra- lack of tourism

After discussing this everyone agreed we should focus on public transport replacing private transport in Canberra. And that one large aspect that is missing in Canberra is a reliable public transport system. Claire mentioned that she had recently visited Canberra and noticed that the only way to travel via public transport is with busses. Busses, while they can be reliable can also feel very unsafe when someone is traveling alone or at night. We agreed that a light rail system like those that are being designed for the Gold Coast and The Sunshine Coast would be a really convenient alternative.

We discussed our thoughts with Jane, who said that we were heading in the right direction and that we were thinking of something very different to the rest of the groups in the class. She said that we should also consider the fact that Canberra might expand in the future as it is quite a small City now, and that we should remember that we have to incorporate Parliament into our design.

After our discussion with the tutor we decided that we would go home and do research, and I will go home and research  statistics on:
·         why people visit Canberra
·          How many people visit Canberra
·         Where they stay when the visit Canberra, etc
