This group meeting mainly focussed on organising and discussing the research that all of us went home and did over the weekend. At this meeting, we also finalised our concept.
After doing research about Canberra and their transport system, we have realised that there is a serious lack of public transport within the city. The only method of public transport in Canberra is their bus network. There is no train network running within the city, instead, the only train network is CountryLink, which connects Canberra to Sydney and other cities on Australia’s eastern side. Therefore we have proposed to develop a light rail system which would connect the most important areas of Canberra to each other, and most importantly connect the rest of Canberra to Capitol Hill.
Canberra is a very spread out city, and we realised that Capital Hill and Civic alone are around 3km away from each other. This obviously does not make it easier to get around the city. By introducing a light rail system will not only make it easier to move around Canberra, it will also create a way of attracting tourists to the area, and create a convenient way from tourists to move around, getting off of the a plane at the airport and getting onto a light rail at airport station and riding to their hotel or to see the sites of the city from the light rail. As mentioned by Paul in last week’s lecture, when he spoke about linking public transport in New York, we thought this could be done with the light rail system by placing stations at areas like the airport, the CountryLink station and all around Canberra near tourist destinations, hotels etc. The system can also easily be used by politicians to move to and from their hotels or homes to Parliament House as well as traveling to the train station and airport instead of driving.
We decided to go home and just summerise any info found to be able to clearly explain any if the information to Jane at the tutorial tomorrow.
